CURRENT LOL SEASON 8
Previously, the new seasons have even begun at the beginning of the new year. The start date for season 8 has been announced for January 16 2018.
Some important notes to keep in mind about League of Legends season 8 is the fact that the game’s rune system is being revamped, making them free and making rune farming essentially obsolete. There’s a series of new keystones as well, which will offer some pretty monumental changes by way of the game’s current meta.

SEASON 7
League of Legends has a ranking system that is based on seasons. Currently, season 7 is going strong but it’s also coming to an end. Season 7 started on December 8th 2016 and is going to end on November 7th 2017. Every season brings new big changes that are meant to improve the game and optimize it. Every previous season has had a preseason also. For Season Rewards and Victorious Skins check our post.
After the season 7 ends all players will get a reward for playing. Check for rewards lower in this post.
After Season 7 ends we enter into a pre-season phase until League of Legends season 8 begins. Generally, it lasts for a few months after a previous season has ended. During the preseason you will be able to play ranked games which can help you get a higher rank at the start of season 8. Elo decay is removed during the preseason. What that means is that you don’t have to feel as pressured to play ranked because your elo won’t drop to a lower division.

LOL SEASON 6
Season 6 brought a lot of new changes to the game. New champion select has been introduced. Each player is able to choose two positions before the queue (or fill). Also a new feature, “pick intent”, helps everyone understand the champ you want to play.
Introduced in Season 6 is Hextech Crafting. Hextech crafting allows you to open chests with keys earned by winning matchmade games. Mastery Chests are earned by performing well across a variety of champions or as part of a team. To the loot part blue (champion) and orange (cosmetic) essence have been added also. Champion essence is used to upgrade champion shards into permanent loot, and Cosmetic essence is used to craft all other types of loot from different kinds of shards, such as champion or ward skins.
Also introduced was a brand new League of Legends mobile app.
LOL SEASON 5
Preseason 5 was accompanied by patch 4.20 and it was one of the biggest updates. The big theme of the 2015 preseason is Strategic Diversity. Biggest changes introduced concerned jungle and objectives like dragons and Baron. Instead of gold, dragons now give buffs to the whole team for the full duration of the game. Baron Nashor has always been intended to be the siege-breaker. Killing Baron gives your team empowered recall and empowered minions. Inner turrets have been given a regenerating shield. They introduced a new river monster, the Rift Scuttler. When a team defeats the Scuttle crab, they're awarded a vision bubble and shrine that grants out of combat movement speed in front of Baron or Dragon pit. Also many new items have been introduced and reworked in the game.
LOL SEASON 4
Season 4 started on November 20, 2014 with Preseason by two patch V3.14 and V3.15. The end of the pre-season and the official start of Season 4 Champion Series began on January 15, 2014.
Notable changes from this season are the new audio engine, numerous featured game modes and new masteries.
Changes to the wards have also been made. Champions could only have 3 Stealth Wards placed at a time and they could carry no more than 5 Stealth Wards in their inventory. Also stealth for Vision Wards has been removed and champions could only have 1 Vision Ward placed at a time. Placing a new Vision Ward would replace the previous one.
As always new champions have been added, some reworked and improved.
LOL SEASON 3
Season Three patch changes began on December 4, 2012, almost four weeks after the release of patch V1.0.0.151. The new patch introduced a new set of masteries, the removal, remake and addition of items, the removal of the summoner spells Surge and Promote, and the addition of Barrier to Summoner's Rift and Twisted Treeline.
They introduced a new League system, added new smart pings (Radial Menu) and created a new map for tutorial and ARAM games: Howling Abyss. On top of that there’s also the addition of the Gifting Center. Around the same time League of Legends Open Beta for Mac has been released
LOLSEASON 2
Season Two is the second competitive time period for League of Legends. It began on November 29, 2011, a week after the release of patch V1.0.0.130.
The patch introduced a new set of masteries, the removal of the summoner spells Fortify and Rally, and the addition of Surge and Promote for Classic Mode.
They also improved A.I. bots, added spectator mode, added Honor system and introduced a new game mode: Dominion.
LOL SEASON 1
League of Legends began hosting on July 13, 2010 in patch V1.0.0.96. It marked the official kickoff of competitive League of Legends. Season 1 ended on August 23, 2011.
At the end of Season 1, League of Legends had a total of 76 available champions to choose from.
Season 1 introduced ranked games. Summoners of Level 30 will be able to indulge in the ranked game system. At launch, ranked players will be able to join one of three queues: 3v3 Premade, 5v5 Premade, or 5v5 Solo. Players will receive an individual rating for each of these queues.
Ladders – Once Ranked Play begins, players who choose to participate will have their Elo ratings displayed publicly on the League of Legends Ladder. On the ladder, players will be able to see just how they stack up against the rest of their fellow summoners.
Draft Pick – Champion selection during ranked play will take on the form of a live draft. In 5v5 premade and 3v3 premade, the first phase of this draft process will provide the inviter of each team with the opportunity to ban the use of two champions. Banned champions cannot be selected for use on either team.

From season 1 League of Legends has always found a way to reward their players. Rewards for playing ranked in League of legends have always consisted from champion skins, wards skins and profile borders. Champion and ward skins have always been exclusive to that one lol season. What this means is that there is no other way to obtain that particular skin other than achieving a rank of at least Gold on ranked matchmaking. All rewards are given out by the Riot team at the end of a particular season.
There are also skins that have been given out as rewards but the requirements were different. We will talk about those too.

Here is the breakdown by ranks (tier) of all rewards.
